£6 million investment to build sports hall, college campus and affordable homes in Boston and Wyberton

A new sports hall, college campus and affordable homes will be built thanks to a £6 million cash injection.

Government Levelling Up money has been pledged to the schemes, which are aimed to benefit the wider community.

Of the cash, £2.8 million will go towards helping Boston College transform the long-unused Haven Wharf site in the town to open a digital and creative campus.

The college, which also has campus in Spalding, offers education opportunities to youngsters and adults from many surrounding towns.

Meanwhile, the remaining £3.2 million will be used towards the completion of Boston United’s community sports complex, as well as the building of 30 affordable homes near the site in Wyberton.

Funding will help the Pilgrims - who won promotion to the National League at the end of the season - complete their south stand which will incorporate a sportshall, gym, cafe and soft play area, as well as seating and terracing for away supporters.

United’s Jakemans Community Stadium forms part of Wyberton’s Quadrant development, which inlcudes housing and retail space.

“I am absolutely delighted that this funding has been agreed and will deliver this backing for Boston,” said MP Matt Warman, welcoming the news.

The funding was announced on Friday (May 24), with Boston being one of five areas in England and Scotland to benefit from the latest round of Levelling Up funding.

This forms part of a £13 million investment in the Boston area, which also includes £7 million to help remodel and expand the facilities available at the Geoff Moulder Leisure Complex.

“In Boston we are investing £13m in regeneration and improving access to community sports facilities, including £7m for Boston Leisure Centre and £3.2m to complete Boston United’s community sports complex which supports young people and will include 30 affordable homes,” the Government’s website explained.

“Alongside this, we are investing over £1.5m for projects to support community groups and boost tourism and £2.8m for Boston College to acquire and develop the Haven Wharf site to open a digital and creative campus.”
