‘A piece of art to show gratitude to visitors!’ RSPB submits plans for new facilities at Freiston Shore
Plans to improve visitor facilities at a popular nature reserve have been submitted.
The RSPB want to build a bird hide, toilet block and extend the car park at its Freiston Shore site - which they hope will serve as a ‘piece of art to show gratitude to visitors’.
“The proposal seeks permission for the erection of an amenities block and bird hide with accompanying footpaths and vegetation, as well as the extension of the existing car park and addition of a designated picnic area and associated landscaping,” the design and access statement prepared by agent Neil Dowlman Architecture explains.
“These proposals support the previous RSPB approved application for a new saltwater lagoon within the nature reserve, and together, the new lagoon and proposed facilities will greatly improve the nature reserve for both the wildlife habitat and the visitors.”
The amenities block would include one accessible WC, one women's WC, one men's WC, storage room a covered area for shelter and bike stands.
The new bird hide would be situated on the southern end of the site within the open weltands area, facing north east to ensure the sun will be behind the visitors and providing the best possible lighting for birdwatching across the new lagoon.
It would benefit from ramped access.
Extending the car park would create 36 new spaces, taking the total number of bays up to 60.
Due to the extension of the parking, the existing picnic area would be relocated.
The RSPB says it is also taking steps to avoid potential vandalism at the site.
“Potential vandalism and antisocial behaviour are a concern,” the design and access statement submitted to Boston Borough Council added.
“Therefore, all features have been designed to be vandal proof and deter antisocial behaviour.
“Such features include timed automatic locking doors for the WCs, sufficient space between the existing retaining wall and roof to ensure no climbing, as well as not creating tight alleys which could entice loitering.
“The purpose of the amenities building is to provide safe and clean, sanitary and baby changing facilities for all visitors, and is an integral part of the ongoing management and improvements to Freiston Shore Nature Reserve by the RSPB.
“However, it was our mission to make it more than just a plain toilet block. The proposal is a piece of art that represents the significance of the nature reserve and its visitors support the RSPB.
“It is a way of showing gratitude to the visitor's ongoing support.”
