Eat My Words: We review Los Burritos in Boston

Ever check the menu and realise you just can’t make up your mind?

Well that was definitely the case at a recent meal at Los Burritos.

If, like me, the majority of the Mexican food you consume comes from starter kit boxes which charge you a bank-busting amount of money for what boils down to a bit of seasoning, salsa, tortillas and an easy-to-follow recipe on the rear then you’ll know how exciting it is to get out and try the real deal now and again.

With too many inviting options on the menu, my wife Laura and I started getting a bit of FOMO and decided play a bit of mix and match, ordering two mains, a side plus a starter so we could over-indulge on a bit of everything.

And, well, I have to say it was the correct choice in more ways than one.

I remember coming to this Boston restaurant back in the day when it was a dark, dingy rock bar called the Axe & Cleaver, where local legends and the stars of tomorrow would blast out their tracks to the delight of the packed pub.

To suggest it’s had a bit of a makeover since then would be like saying Madonna has changed a bit.

No space is wasted inside the restaurant.

You’re met at the entrance by a bright blue wall with the legend Life Is Short Make It Burritoful in multi-coloured lettering.

If that doesn’t tell you this is a taste of Mexico then the Mariachi guitars, sombreros, cacti and Frida Kahlo cushions certainly do.

This is a bright, vibrant and fun-looking restaurant, with an equally exciting menu.

Having whittled our choices down to a pulled beef hard shell tacos, chicken fajitas, gambas al ajillo and sweet potato chips we waited for our order by tucking into the complimentary tortilla chips.

I’m not always one for sharing food (think Joey in Friends), but on this occasion I’m glad I did as it afforded a chance to try a little more.

The fajitas and burritos were both exactly what I’d hoped for, cooked perfectly and far superior to the homemade packet stuff.

The chips weren’t as crispy as I prefer, but tasted good nonetheless while the prawns in garlic and paprika oil did the job.

Had we not been sharing I think I’d have had to overdo the side orders a little bit as I still felt I could have eaten more, but I can’t knock the taste.

An enjoyable dining experience.

Out of five:

Food: The mains were fantastic, the chips tasty - although not to my preference - and the prawns super. ****

Drink: A pint of Super Bock and a bottle of Becks Blue ***

Decor: You definitely knew where you were… the place was vibrant, lively and no space was wasted *****

Staff: Everyone was charming ***

Price: The meal came to £43.90 - fajitas £13, tacos £12.50, prawns £7, chips £3.50, Super Bock £3.90, Becks Blue £4. The mains were great value but, as always, the price of a non-alcoholic beer raises eyebrows ****
