Former Leicester City and Portsmouth chief executive Barrie Pierpoint named new Boston mayor
A former chief executive of Leicester City Football Club has been elected as the 490th Mayor of Boston.
Coun Barrie Pierpoint was chosen to be the next worshipful mayor for the area during Boston Borough Council's Annual General Meeting (AGM) on Monday evening (May 19).
Proposed for the position by council leader Anne Dorrian and seconded by deputy leader Dale Broughton, he accepted the honour, taking over from Coun Helen Staples who held the role for 2024/25.
Speaking to the Local Democracy Reporting Service, he said: "There's a lot to do and there's a lot of work involved, but I'm looking forward to all the engagement, visits, meeting people in the community and doing lots of interesting activities and events - and I really am going to be a mayor of the people."
Born in Nottingham, Coun Pierpoint graduated with a degree in business from Nottingham Trent University and later became Leicester City Football Club’s first-ever chief executive in the 1990s, moulding the club into a Premier League side with two League Cup wins along the way.
In his own words, during his time at the club, turnover rose “from £2 million to £24–25 million" over a ten-year period.
He then started a one-year contract from 2000 to 2001 as chief executive of Portsmouth Football Club and later became the interim chief executive of Bradford City Football Club, where he oversaw the launch of a new £9 million stand. In May 2022, he was appointed chief executive of King's Lynn Town.
He is now a business and management consultant with clients across the East Midlands as well as a personal one-to-one coach for university graduates in business, management, and leadership.
Barrie’s political career began when he was elected to Boston Borough Council in 2015 under UKIP. However, he chose to leave the party following the election, eventually deciding to become an independent member.
"I've done lots of different things in my time," he continued, pointing toward his extensive career.
"I've had a very exciting career, a very challenging career and I'm looking forward to an exciting 12 months as mayor, doing lots of things.
"I really want to go into lots of places where people have never seen the mayor before, I really want to make sure that people know I am the mayor and I'm going to be in as many places as possible. If anybody wants the mayor to visit them, all they have to do is ask."
Coun Pierpoint’s relative, Pamela Love, will support him as Mayoress. Coun Patricia Marson was appointed Deputy Mayor and Donna Gross Deputy Mayoress.
