Boston man who drunkenly assaulted three police officers after split from girlfriend avoids jail

A man who assaulted three police officers has escaped jail.

Twenty-three-year-old Tiago Ferreira had turned to drink after the end of a relationship, a court was told.

He pleaded guilty to three charges of assaulting an emergency worker when he appeared before Boston magistrates on Wednesday (November 20).

Prosecutor Marie Stace told the court police had responded to a report of a broken window in Boston at 1.20am on May 11 and discovered the defendant attempting to hide from them behind a skip.

Reading witness reports from the three officers she explained Ferreira kicked one in the head as they pinned him to the floor while attempting to arrest him.

Ferreira was found to be bleeding and was taken to hospital where he was behaving in an ‘irate’ fashion, Ms Stace added.

The court was told that while waiting for an X-ray, the defendant bit one officer’s hand and spat in another’s face.

Defending Ferreira, of Windsor Terrace, Boston, Lloyd Edwards said his client had been drinking alcohol and ‘doesn’t recall a lot of what happened’.

“His girlfriend had separated from him and he was very upset,” he continued.

“He used drink as a coping mechanism.

“He vaguely recalls parts of the evening but can’t remember kicking an officer and appears thoroughly ashamed of his behaviour.

“He doesn’t recall a lot of what happened but accepts what the officers have said.”

Mr Edwards added the damage caused to the window was ‘accidental’.

Ferreira was handed a six-month prison sentence, suspended for 18 months.

He was also ordered to carry out a community order which includes 60 hours of unpaid work and 30 drink rehabilitation days.

He must also pay a total of £400 in compensation to the officers.
