Grimsthorpe Castle wins Historic Houses Collections Award

A collection of royal artefacts helped a tourist attraction to clinch a national award.

Grimsthorpe Castle won this year’s Historic Houses Collections Award - a title introduced to celebrate the importance of historic buildings across the country.

Grimsthorpe Castle near Bourne has been owned by the Willoughby family for more than 500 years and their close connection to the monarchy means it is home to items made for past kings and queens.

Among the exhibits are a silk doublet and trunkhose dating from 1600 to 1605 which likely belonged to Robert Bertie, the 13th Lord Willoughby de Eresby, and may have been worn by him to the coronation of James I in 1603.

Collections curator Emma Miller said: “We are delighted and honoured to receive this award. It endorses our commitment to bringing the significance of the historic collection at Grimsthorpe to a wider public audience.”
