Bourne’s fire station opened its doors for picnic-goers to look around the station and its engines.

A spokesperson for the town council, which organised the event, said this year’s picnic was the best attended yet.

They added: “Of course none of this would have been made possible without Bourne United Charities allowing us to use Wellhead Park for the day, so a massive thank you to them and also for the people of Bourne, who turned up and made the day a roaring success.”

The event coincided with an anniversary marked by the Bourne Racing Motors Club.

Known as ‘The Homecoming’, the club had a display of classic cars at the Corn Exchange to mark the 75th anniversary of Bourne man Raymond Mays winning the Shelsley Walsh Speed Hill Climb in Worcestershire in June 1950.

It was the final time Mays – who had established British Formula 1 racing team BRM in the 1940s, won the 1,000-yard event – which has been taking place annually since the early days of motorcar.
