Bourne Town beat Shirebrook Town in the United Counties League

Five different goalscorers were on target as Bourne Town recorded a comfortable home win over Shirebrook in the United Counties League on Saturday.

Richard Jones, Zac Allen, Will Bird, Cameron Johnson and Zak Munton all netted in the 5-0 win at the JJ Mac Stadium.

It ensured a successful day for the Wakes who had to overcome a setback before the match when Shaun Archer was injured in the warm-up which forced him to miss the game.

Bourne boss Michael Goode commented: "It was a good day apart from losing Shaun to an unfortunate injury in the warm-up.

"The lads have been working their socks off in games but we've just lacked some consistency in our passing and delivery from set pieces and crosses.

"We just haven't got any rhythm going but we started well on Saturday, worked hard, kept it tight and then got a foothold in the game which allowed us to play some decent football."

Bourne had created the better chances in the opening exchanges with Brad Marshall heading just over and Bird twice going close before two goals in three minutes gave the Wakes control of the contest.

Jones scored his first goal since returning to the club last season with a back post header from a 35th minute corner and then Allen doubled the advantage shortly after as he rifled his finish into the roof of the net after the ball had broken to him in the box.

Bourne came close to adding a third on the stroke of half-time but Johnson was denied by a fine save from the Shirebrook goalkeeper with Munton seeing the ball cleared off the line before he could reach the rebound.

Allen and Munton tried their luck from distance after the break before Bourne increased their advantage in the 66th minute.

Fine play from Johnson saw him skilfully create an opening to cross with the ball being turned into the net by a Shirebrook defender under pressure from Bird.

Johnson then got in on the goalscoring act himself with Bourne's fourth goal two minutes later as he latched onto a long ball before finishing with aplomb.

A fine save from home goalkeeper Dan Swan then ensured a second successive clean sheet in the league for the Wakes and denied Shirebrook any way back into the match.

Johnson won a penalty with 14 minutes remaining when he was brought down in the area but Munton fired his spot kick over the crossbar.

However, Munton made amends four minutes later with Bourne's fifth goal after holding off a defender and finishing at the near post to cap a solid performance from a home side who are still missing skipper Robbie Ellis and last season's top goalscorer James Hill-Seekings due to injury.

Manager Goode added: "We were in total control after the second goal went in.

"The front four got a really good grip on the game and, although they sat off us, we played some of our best football for a while.

"We were just happy to get the three points because we're still in the process of bedding into this league.

"We still haven't been in a position to pick our strongest squad yet with Seeks and Robbie both injured."

Bourne have a derby date with Deeping Rangers on Tuesday night.
