Bourne Town beat Newark and Sherwood in the United Counties League

Four second half goals fired Bourne Town to an 11th successive victory in all competitions on Tuesday night.

The Wakes defeated Newark & Sherwood in the United Counties League Premier Division North clash at the JJ Mac Stadium.

An own goal gave Bourne the initiative early in the second period before strikes from Will Bird, Zac Allen and Tom Siddons moved the second-placed Wakes closer to the summit.

They are now just four points adrift of table-topping Eastwood with two games in hand on the leaders after a strong all-round performance in blustery conditions.

Boss Michael Goode said: "I thought we started really well in the first 15 minutes because we spoke about our tempo before the game.

"We couldn't get the breakthrough unfortunately but we looked like we'd got a good foothold in the game.

"You can't keep that intensity going forever and we did step off it a little bit and Newark are really dangerous from set pieces.

"I was quite pleased to get in at 0-0 because, when we came out for the second half, the wind had picked up.

"We spoke about limiting our touches, passing the ball in the right areas and going forwards quickly and that's exactly what we did for the first goal.

"We then went for the kill which was good because we had that momentum going forward. It was a great night and a big result for us."

Bourne began brightly with Richard Jones firing well over the crossbar following a corner and then Robbie Ellis turning another effort just past the post.

Newark weathered the early pressure and, with the strong wind in their favour, started to come more into the contest.

Home goalkeeper Dan Swan was called into a smart save to foil Jamie Williamson with Liam Moran flashing another wide for the visitors.

Swan blocked a low effort from Kieran Cummings in the latter stages of the half with Jones on hand to block Kole Lambert's follow-up.

Cummings had the final chance of the opening 45 minutes but again Swan was equal to his cross-shot with another crucial save.

Bourne came out eager to regain the initiative after the break and had broken the deadlock within two minutes of the restart as a spritely surge forward saw Henry Dunn's low cross turned into the net by covering Newark defender.

The Wakes now had the bit between their teeth and they doubled their advantage just past the hour mark when Zac Allen was brought down in the penalty area and Bird scored from the resultant spot kick.

Two goals within 60 seconds in the final six minutes then wrapped up the win as Allen added the third goal directly from a corner.

Martin Tudosa was then bundled over in the box shortly after and substitute Tom Siddons stepped up to mark his Bourne bow with a goal following his arrival from Stamford.

It was Bourne's 99th goal in all competitions so far this season and they now head to Sleaford Town on Saturday looking to pass the century mark.

Goode added: "We have to get our heads on for Saturday now because it's a tough game.

"They are a young side who will have a really good go at teams so we've got to be right on it and we'll be going straight out to try and win it."

Bourne will then be back in action at the Abbey Lawn on Boxing Day when they host Harrowby United.
