Lawson Capes competes in the Under 17 age group at Loughborough in the Charnwood Open

Bourne Grammar School pupil Lawson Capes has made a solid start to his new outdoor season.

Capes was using a new heavier shot put weight of 5kg in the Under 17 age group at Loughborough at the weekend in the Charnwood Open.

He surpassed his personal indoor best of 16.84m by breaking the 17-metre barrier with 17.10m.

Dad Lewis said: "This was a solid performance considering he has just come out of his heavy lifting phase of training and has just started to throw outdoors in the last couple of weeks.

"It was a great start, although a few things were slightly off and there is so much more to come."

The performance has set Lawson up for a busy season ahead, including a number of England internationals which he is targeting to be selected for.
