Bourne Grammar School pupil Lawson Capes is top of the European rankings for his age group in the shot put
Bourne Grammar School pupil Lawson Capes has risen to the top of the European rankings.
Capes became the new number one in his age group for shot put following his performance at the England Athletics National Championships.
Competing at the English Institute of Sport in Sheffield, Capes opened up with a steady 17.01m which would have been enough to win competition already as his closest rival came second with 15.82m.
He steadily improved throughout the rounds and pulled out a new indoor best of 17.60m.
Capes then topped that in the fourth round with a big throw of 18.59m which surpassed his previous season's best by five centimetres.
This throw put him third in the all time list for his age group indoors as well as top of the European rankings.
His superb indoor performance came on the back of a solid display in Sweden when representing England last week.
