The teenager then travelled to Halle in Germany to compete at the world famous Throws event.

As this was the 50th anniversary, there was a world class field assembled from China, Sweden, Germany, Czech Republic, Netherlands, France and Switzerland.

Capes went in ranked number two in his age category and was hoping for a promising performance.

He threw 18.03m to gain fourth spot and was pipped to a podium place by five centimetres in the last round as an excellent performance from an athlete from China won the event.

Capes gained valuable experience having to deal with weather conditions, travel and timetable changes which saw him throwing at 8am English time after checking in at 6.30am which was an all new and challenging experience to learn from for the future.

The Morton athlete went onto the Pickering Memorial International at Loughborough University where teams were competing from England, Scotland, Wales, Ireland, Sweden, Switzerland and Italy.

Capes was keen to perform again against some of his regular rivals from Sweden, Ireland and England and improve his event record from last year.

He threw 18.40m to set a new record which topped the table in all age groups competing and he also walked away with the best male shot performance of the day.

Capes is now preparing for the defence of his English Schools title but will also be competing at the World Youth Games in Gothenburg, Sweden, in both the shot and discus which will be another great experience to add to his season.
