Bourne Town draw with Coventry Sphinx in the Northern Premier League

Upbeat joint Bourne boss Michael Goode wants his side to start turning their draws into wins after extending their unbeaten run in the Northern Premier League to five games on Saturday.

The Wakes shared the spoils in a 1-1 home draw with Coventry Sphinx in the Midlands Division match at the JJ Mac Stadium.

Bourne again competed well against one of the division's leading teams but remain in the relegation zone after missing out on the maximum haul of points.

Goode said: "We are now disappointed that we haven't got three points either last week or this week and that shows the signs of our progress.

"We've got that little unbeaten run going and we're competing against teams in the top half of the table.

"We just need to back it up now with a couple of wins because we are just short of turning one of those draws into a win.

"We were a missed penalty and a decent chance away from having four points more in the last two games.

"We are pleased with how things are going at the moment and the changing room now knows that the three points are do-able.

"There has been some disappointment from the last couple of games about only getting a point."

Bourne went into Saturday's match without skipper Zac Allen, the in-form Connor Furey and experienced defender Richard Jones.

They fell behind in the 18th minute after conceding two corners in quick succession with the second being turned home at the near post by Jack Downes.

The Wakes responded well to going behind and were denied an equaliser shortly after when Coventry goalkeeper Charlie Woods made a sensational save to deny Jordan O'Brien.

An even second half saw Bourne look threatening going forward and their equaliser arrived just past the hour mark.

Robbie Ellis made a good run to latch onto a through ball and, although his initial effort was saved by Woods, the rebound fell kindly for the midfielder to score.

Ellis then had a header from a corner cleared off line before a late chance fell to Will Bird whose effort was blocked by a covering defender.

Coventry could then have taken the win in stoppage time only to be denied by an excellent save from home goalkeeper Will Lakin which earned Bourne their fourth draw from the last five games.

Goode added: "Our performance was really good all the way through the game.

"I was pleased with our level of performance for the whole 90 minutes and there are definite signs of improvements."

Bourne travel to third-placed Lichfield City on Saturday.
