Bourne Town travel to AFC Whyteleafe in the quarter-final of the FA Vase

Manager Michael Goode wants his Bourne Town side to enjoy their memorable moments in the FA Vase this season and not be overawed by Saturday's quarter-final showdown.

The Wakes are having their best-ever run in the national competition which culminates in a final at Wembley Stadium.

They now travel to Combined Counties Premier Division South pacesetters AFC Whyteleafe on Saturday looking to continue their historic run in what is their seventh successive away tie in the competition.

Goode said: "We've got to be very disciplined because we've been very good away from home.

"We've just got to give it a good go. I want everyone to enjoy it but also not be overawed by it.

"We've played in front of some really big crowds this season and we've had a good run so there's no reason why we can't put some pressure on them and see what they've got.

"We've obviously got a threat from set pieces and we'll just throw everything at it and see what happens."

The two sides go into the last eight tie on a contrasting run of form.

Since beating Atherton Laburnum Rovers in the previous round, Bourne have lost five of their last six games.

They were beaten by Lincoln United in their first match after the FA Vase victory before losing at home to Heanor to hit their title bid in the United Counties League Premier Division North.

Despite booking their place in the Lincolnshire Senior Trophy final by beating Blackstones, Bourne then suffered a surprise home loss to struggling Kimberley Miners Welfare.

That was followed last midweek by a league loss to Skegness Town before Bourne bowed out of the League Cup at the weekend after losing to Rugby Borough on penalties.

Goode added: "I don't think the FA Vase has affected us but certainly playing Lincoln United so close to winning in the last round was physically and mentally draining.

"It was a big ask and, to then lose that game, puts you on that streak of defeats.

"I just want us to enjoy what we're doing on Saturday because that's been hard to do in the last few weeks.

"There was pressure to keep winning and now there's pressure to get a win."

Hosts Whyteleafe are currently top of their league on goal difference from second-placed Redhill with Jersey Bulls in third, three points adrift with two games in hand.

'Leafe, unlike Bourne, have had home advantage in all of their Vase wins which has brought victories over Tower Hamlets (1-0), Saltdean United (4-0), Harefield United (3-1), Tadley Calleva (3-1) and Dereham Town (5-0).

The Surrey side go into the Vase tie on the back of an 11-match winning run with their last defeat coming in mid-December at Tooting and Mitcham.

They also possess four of the division's top 10 marksmen in leading scorer Aaron Watson, former Colchester and Ayr United player Ryan Gondoh, ex-Southend, Luton and MK Dons attacker Ryan Hall and Omari Hibbert who has previously played for Dulwich Hamlet and Carshalton Athletic.

Goode commented: "They've got some good players but it's a one-off game and we'll go hard at it.

"They are on absolute fire and we're on a little downward spiral at the moment so we'll try and keep training really low key this week and have a fun session.

"It's a one-off game and if we can keep it tight and keep our shape for as long as possible then anything can happen because you couldn't ask for a tougher draw.

"It's another one away from home and it's absolutely crazy that it's the seventh on the trot.

"We're probably playing the favourites for the competition who have been described as the best step five team in the country at the moment.

"Many of their players have played at a higher level, not just at the next step but several above that.

"We've got to get the formation and personnel right and then we'll have a really good go."

The Wakes are likely to have virtually a full squad available with the exception of top scorer Zac Allen who is still struggling with injury.
