Reaction from Bourne Town manager Michael Goode after their FA Vase defeat to AFC Whyteleafe
Manager Michael Goode wants Bourne Town to look back with pride on their phenomenal achievement in this season's FA Vase competition.
The Wakes' club record-breaking run finally came to an end on Saturday in their quarter-final clash at AFC Whyteleafe.
Gaspar Mico hit the winning goal for the Combined Counties League side after just eight minutes of the last eight tie.
While disappointed to bow out so close to a Wembley final, Goode felt his players couldn't have given any more for the cause.
He said: "We gave it absolutely everything against a really good side.
"Every single player in our team gave it their all and it was a fantastic day for the club.
"We can't have any regrets even though we're all disappointed because we were a whisker away from having a chance.
"It's been a brilliant run for the club and it's really raised our profile.
"There are a number of people in Bourne now who are watching us or having something to do with the club which is phenomenal.
"We're a team which has just got promoted from step six last season to now being in the quarter-finals of the FA Vase and so we are proud of what the club has achieved."
The Wakes had been backed by more than 400 supporters who had travelled to Surrey for their latest away day in the competition.
Seven of Bourne's eight Vase ties this season have been away while Whyteleafe have had home advantage in every round.
Goode added: "It was a good day but we just couldn't sneak through at the end.
"Everything went as well as it could have done apart from the end result.
"The support was unbelievable and it was fantastic to see so many people walking up to the ground when we arrived.
"We have had unbelievable support all through the competition and it's just a shame that they haven't been able to walk out of their front door and walk to the ground for one of those ties at home.
"There was a brilliant atmosphere and no animosity between the clubs.
"Their management team, players, supporters and everyone at the club was very welcoming and respectful."
Bourne had adopted a new system for the clash against the tournament favourites.
Mico's curling opener had given 'Leafe early control of the contest with Bourne goalkeeper Dan Swan then making a couple of fine saves to keep Bourne in the game going into half-time.
Tom Siddons went close with an overhead kick before a hamstring injury curtailed his involvement in the match early in the second half where the Wakes started to gain the upper hand.
Henry Dunn saw a goalbound effort blocked while Zak Munton had two sweet strikes saved by the home goalkeeper.
Bourne had a flurry of set pieces late on with Richard Jones heading agonisingly wide in injury-time as Bourne were unable to find a leveller.
Goode commented: "We changed the formation because if we had gone at them then they might have destroyed us.
"We changed the shape to play a lower block to get more men behind the ball and it largely worked.
"After the goal, we limited them to four other good chances in the first half and, although that sounds a bit ridiculous, they create 15 or 20 good chances every game.
"They are a very slick side but we grew into it and were probably the better side for the last 20 minutes of the match.
"We got our own passing game going while still being pretty resolute defensively.
"We put them under a lot of pressure and the chance did come but we just couldn't take it.
"The boys followed the game-plan largely to what we wanted and we got into a position in the game where we just needed to nick something and we nearly did it."
Bourne are back in United Counties League action on Tuesday night when they host Ashby Ivanhoe in the Premier Division North.
