Deepings Duck Race raises money for Facial Palsy UK and Pancreatic Cancer UK
An army of rubber ducks was cheered along the river in a race for glory.
Three thousand competitors took part in the Deepings Duck Race on Sunday afternoon - each one attracting £1 in sponsorship and the chance for its supporter to win a cash prize.
The race is hosted by the Deepings Lions with proceeds going to Facial Palsy UK and Pancreatic Cancer UK.
The weather proved to be a challenge with the ducks battling a headwind. Many of them relied on canoeists from Peterborough Canoe Club to help them on their way and while some made it to the finish, others barely passed the start line.
The owners of ducks 1274, 1004 and 491 won prizes of £100, £50 and £25 for the main race. The Estate Agents Dash was won by Oakwood, The Shops Derby winner was Private Kollection and The Vine Inn was victorious in the Pubs Classic Chase.
President of Deepings Lions, Tony Plunkett, said: “Each year our duck race grows in popularity and it is wonderful to see so many people enjoying themselves while raising money for great causes. It brings the community together for a fun, crazy day by the river.
“We couldn’t run this event without the fabulous support of the public who sponsored ducks, our club members and our volunteers.”
The event was opened by the chairperson of Deeping St James Parish Council, Kate Shinkins-Hoppe, and the races were started by flower queen Becs Roberts and her deputy Demi Fontaine. Peterborough City Radio presenter Keith Dalton provided commentary during the races.
Proceeds are still being counted but is is hoped at least £3,000 which will be split between the chosen charities. The head office of Facial Palsy UK is based in Market Deeping and Pancreatic Cancer UK was chosen in memory of Tom Felton, a former member of Deepings Lions.
