Animation-themed Barrowby Scarecrow Festival was ‘lots of fun’
A popular scarecrow festival returned to a village over the weekend.
The Barrowby Scarecrow Festival took place across Saturday and Sunday for the 12th time.
This year’s theme was animation, with popular characters on show, such as Shrek, Groot and the Lorax.
There were also local stalls on the village green on both days.
Brian Inglis, chair of the scarecrow event organising group, said: “It was very good. It stayed dry.
“There were 27 scarecrows, so we had lots of fun.
“I think people [enjoyed the scarecrows]. There were lots of people about!”
The prize winning scarecrows were:
1st prize: Room on The Broom in Debdale
2nd prize: Fantastic Mr. Fox in The Square
3rd prize: Wallace and Gromit in Thorald Road
Under 12 winner: It isn’t Scarecrowing, It’s Scarecrowing in Style in Pastures Road.
Most Imaginative: Arrietty in Church Street
The Funniest: Mr. Stick in Hurst Crescent
Commendation: Garfield and Oldie in Mill Row; Postman Pat in Patman Cottages
The judges said: “All the scarecrows were amazing and so much effort had been put into their creation.
“It was very difficult to judge. Obviously reduce, reuse and recycle was key especially in today’s world.
“Room on The Broom was so creative and really had a wow factor. The detail was amazing and could have been the real deal!
“Even down to the wart on the nose! And to suspend the whole scarecrow was brilliant.
“So many of the scarecrows were lifelike – what a great village effort.”
