Aerial shots of the Grantham bypass have shown how far work has progressed since September, with the first phase of the £80 million project including the creation of two new roundabouts.

Lincolnshire County Council’s senior project leader Les Outram has said they are still on track to complete the first phase by June this year, at which point they also hope to commence stage two.

Mr Outram said: “We are making good progress on the road and roundabouts which are now clearly visible in the former quarry and just off Spitalgate Level.

“The sub-base layer in now complete and as soon as it has dried out fully, following several weeks of constant downpours, we can start to lay the road surface which will protect the work we’ve already done. Meanwhile we have plenty of work to do on kerbing, footpaths, utilities, lighting, drainage etc.

“We are still on track for the first phase to be completed and to start the second phase by June. We will shortly start discussions with a contractor to complete this second stage.”

This will see the new road linked to the A1, with a bridge created underneath along with slip roads and two roundabouts either side.

The third phase will be the continuation of the bypass east across the Witham Valley, the East Coast Main Line and River Witham, with a bridge to join up with the A52 at Somerby Hill.
