Former Allington village surgery transformed into library

A disused doctors surgery has been given a new lease of life after being transformed into a community library.

The Old Surgery, which was based in an annexe on the side of Allington Village Hall, closed two years ago after opening in 1986 and serving residents in the village for 30 years.

Determined to see the room be put to good use again, the village hall management committee asked local residents about what they would like the room to be used for.

Chairman David Smedley said: “We lost the pre-school and toddler group at the same time that the doctors’ surgery closed. We tried to re-let the room but to no avail. We didn’t want it to remain empty for much longer so we distributed leaflets to all the local residents to ask for their ideas.

“The majority of responses that we received said that they would like to see it turned into a community library.”

After such a positive reaction, the committee installed lots of shelves and residents have donated hundreds of books.

David added: “The response from everyone has been fantastic. Once word got out, the library quickly filled up. One chap even donated 300 CDs and another donated DVDs.”

A number of information displays have also been installed to relay local history, including the story of the village hall extension.

The library, which won’t be manned, will be open when the village hall hosts its various clubs and events throughout the year.

As well as the library, the village hall, which is located on Side Street, also holds regular coffee mornings throughout summer, soup and jacket potato mornings in the winter, Tai-Chi classes, crafting afternoons including quilters and knitters, an outreach post office, Women’s Institute (WI) and a sit-down fitness group for the elderly.
