Lord Quentin Davies, former MP for Grantham and Stamford, dies aged 80




A former MP whose career spanned over 40 years has died.

Lord Quentin Davies, a former MP for Grantham and Stamford, died aged 80.

Lord Davies, who died on January 13, was MP for Grantham and Stamford from 1987 to 2010. For most of that time he was a member of the Conservative Party and served as a member of Iain Duncan Smith's shadow cabinet from 2001 to 2003, but in 2007 he defected to join the Labour Party.

Having grown up in Oxford, Lord Davies then studied history at the University of Cambridge.

He joined the diplomatic service, working for the Foreign and Commonwealth Office in the late 1960s which included a stint at the embassy in Moscow.

In 1974 he became a merchant banker, continuing as a consultant after his election to parliament.

First elected to the Stamford and Spalding constituency seat, after it was abolished Lord Davies went on to represent Grantham and Stamford.

In 2010 he decided not to stand for re-election and entered the House of Lords, where he served until 2023.

Nick Boles was elected as Grantham and Stamford MP in 2010, serving until Gareth Davies won the seat in December 2019.

Lord Davies leaves wife Chantal and sons Alex and Nick. His funeral is being held in Frampton, near Boston.

Lincolnshire County Council leader Councillor Martin Hill (Con) told the BBC he was “larger than life”.
