Gantham schoolgirl donates her long locks to children's cancer charity

An eight-year-old girl has donated her long locks to a charity that provides wigs for children with cancer.

Layla Charley, a Year 3 pupil at St Anne’s Primary School, got her waist-length hair chopped off last Wednesday, for the Little Princess Trust.

The Trust make wigs for children going through cancer treatment, and has received a lot of support from young fundraisers in and around Grantham.

Proud mum, Eleanor, said: “Layla has always had lovely long hair and I have been dreading her cutting it but it is something that she had been talking about doing for charity for a while.”

Despite having enough hair to donate without having it all cut off, Layla, was determined to donate as much as she could.

As well as donating her long locks, Layla has also been raising money in sponsorship and has already raised £160.

Eleanor added: “She was a bit emotional the night before the hair appointment done but it was more because she was happy.”

Layla, who also lives at home with dad Wayne, brother Tom, 16, and sister Alana 13, went along with her mum to Kelly Yates, a mobile hairdresser, who only took 20 minutes to cut her waist-length hair into a stylish bob.

Charity manager Monica Glass from Princess Trust said: “We are so grateful to Layla for her incredibly kind donation. To hear that Layla cut her waist length hair to her shoulders is wonderful; we can use Layla’s donated locks to make real-hair wigs for children and young people with cancer and other medical conditions. Layla has also raised a fantastic amount of money - £160! We would like to thank Layla and all of her supporters for helping the Little Princess Trust.”
