More empty shops in Grantham town centre than national average
A retail study has highlighted vacancies in Grantham town centre are 4.6 per cent higher than the national average.
The figures were revealed in a report presented to South Kesteven District Council’s cabinet members, and which will help to form the new Local Planfor the district up to 2036.
The retail study states: “Grantham town centre, the largest centre in the district, is underperforming, with vacancies 4.6 per cent higher than the national average. The number of national retailers within the town centre has declined over recent years, compounding vacancies rate.
“The town centre has struggled to cope with competition from the adjoining retail parks which are well occupied by a range of national retailers. However, unlike some of the smaller towns in the district, Grantham town centre is used for main convenience shopping and not just grocery top up shopping. This suggests a strong footfall, but not a wide enough comparison retail offer to attract expenditure.”
The study goes on to say that Stamford, Bourne and Market Deeping, all have vacancies below the national average.
Responding to the figures, chief executive at the Lincolnshire Chamber of Commerce, Simon Beardsley, said: “While it is disappointing to hear that vacancies in Grantham town centre are 4.6 per cent higher than the national average, help is readily available for retailers in the South Kesteven area.
“Through our partnership with South Kesteven District Council, retailers have access to SKDC4Business - a programme which provides specific and tailored support needed by retailers. To date, the programme has assisted 15 retailers in the town centre. A key benefit of this programme is the free support and advice for local independent retailers from leading retail expert, Corin Birchall.”
