More than £3 million to be spent on new affordable housing in Grantham

Proposals for three new affordable council housing schemes in Grantham have been approved by South Kesteven District Council’s cabinet.

At a meeting of the cabinet yesterday, recommendations were unanimously approved to construct 18 new dwellings at Trent Road, on the site of the former Jacko’s pub, along with four at Earlesfield Lane and five on Westry Close.

The Trent Road development, a mix of one and two-bedroomed flats and two bed houses, is expected to be completed in May 2017, at an estimated cost of £2,070,000.

Four one-bed flats on Earlesfield Lane will cost £440,000 and hoped to be finished by December 2016

Westry Close will see one wheelchair accessible bungalow, and four further bungalows, with the £600,000 costs part funded by section 106 contributions from other developments totalling £490,000. The expected completion date for this project is December next year.

The construction of the new homes will be procured through the East Midlands Property Alliance (EMPA) framework, and will be subject to obtaining suitable planning permission.

The Trent Road plans are proposed to be the first phase at the former site of Jacko’s, where SKDC intend to create a larger mixed use development over the next three to four years, including 21 further new homes, together with retail, recreation and improved community facilities.

Housing portfolio holder, councillor Frances Cartwight, said: “I am really pleased to see these projects coming forward. There is a lack of such schemes at the moment, and we know that there is a need for affordable housing.”
