Newly-wed to have head shaved in support of Barkston cousin recovering from cancer

A newlywed woman is preparing to cut off her 22-inch long locks in an act of solidarity with her cousin, who is now in remission from cancer.

Andrew Walker, from Barkston, has suffered with lymphoma for the past year and spent a lot of that time fund-raising for a number of wig charities, after losing his hair through chemotherapy.

His cousin, Emma Nuttall, 26, who lives in Lincoln, wanted to show her support.

She said: “A number of my male family members shaved their heads in support last Christmas and managed to raise £5,000 for charity. At the time I was keen to show my support, but with my wedding around the corner, I couldn’t quite bring myself to shave my head.

“However, the wedding has been and gone, and now it’s time for me to do my part.”

Losing his hair had a big impact on Andrew.

Emma added: “It came as a real shock. Andrew has got two little girls and it was the first physical sign that they had that their daddy was poorly.”

After losing his hair, Andrew was shocked at the poor quality of the NHS wigs provided and found out about a lady who makes personalised wigs, but they were very expensive.

Andrew, who is now in remission, is now working alongside the wig maker to fund-raise for other people to have personalised wigs made.

Emma added: “He recently paid for a 30-year-old mum-of-two who has lost her hair to have her very own personalised wig made. She was ecstatic.”

Emma is planning to have her hair shaved off on August 3, adding: “I’m feeling a bit apprehensive but I’m excited to try and make a difference.”

Emma will be fund-raising for The Little Princess Trust, which provides real hair wigs free of charge to children across the UK and Ireland that have lost their own hair due to cancer treatment and other illnesses.
