‘Spud in a Pot’ raises funds for Grantham Journal Children’s Fund
Spuds of all shapes and sizes were weighed in at the weekend, raising money for the Journal’s charity.
It is the third year of ‘Spud in a Pot’, organised by district councillor Ian Selby and sponsored by Downtown.
The fundraiser – this year in aid of the Grantham Journal Children’s Fund – invites people to grow potatoes from April to the July weigh-in, with prizes for the heaviest batch and funniest shaped potato.
The weigh-in took place at Harrowby United Football Club’s Dickens Road ground on Sunday.
Coun Selby said: “I’m delighted that the weather was kind to us, but most of all I’m pleased that such a lot of people enjoyed taking part in the spud challenge, and that we managed to raise £360 for the Children’s Fund.
“I’d like to express a big thank you to our sponsors Downtown, to Harrowby Utd, my mother Anita for helping out with the raffle, my fellow judges Justin Lill and Trevor Rickards, to everyone who entered the challenge and to Roy Wright, trustee of the Grantham Journal Children’s Fund, for attending.”
The winners were Kathleen Peasgood and Andrew Buckberry with a weight of 3.1kg, in second place was Martin and Sue Kinghoward with 2.4kg, and Julie Hipkiss was third with 1.9kg.
The winner of the funniest-shaped spud was John Selby.
