Villagers make start on stripping down Marston pub
Villagers are getting their hands dirty stripping down a pub which they hope to get up and running again this year.
The villagers in Marston have been stripping wallpaper and wood chip off the walls of the Thorold Arms, which the village successfully bought as a community interest company last year.
The pub has been empty three years and locals want to get it open again this year. They have plans to include a shop and bed and breakfast but need about £86,000 to get it all up and running.
Fund-raiser Mike Allen, said: “Two of the internal walls are due to be replaced by steels in the next couple of weeks after which real progress will be made.
“The project has joined the SKLottery as part of the ongoing fund-raising. We still need a considerable amount to complete all the works and we are still hopeful of winning more grants though in these difficult times there are are far more applications than there are grants available.
“Since purchasing the premises the villagers have banded together to clear the outside area, take up the oak flooring, which will be re-laid after skimming, and Peter Baker (P. V. Baker Fencing Hougham) has provided a whole new section of fencing at the side of the pub as the original was in a very poor state.”
