Popular Grantham Running Club 5k race is held at Harrowby Hall Lane

The ever-growing Grantham Running Club's 5k race continues to go from strength to strength.

A bumper turn-out of 64 runners attempted to take advantage of the cool conditions on the day of this year's event at Harrowby Hall Lane.

First across the line in the men's field was new member Jake Richardson, setting a new club record (second claim) time of 15:48.

Richardson is an established runner in the elite fields of the East Midlands race scene and, while he has ambitions to get back to his best, he is now enjoying the more social side of his running.

Next was the consistent Gavin Potter with a time of 17:35, failing to improve on his best set of 17:11 in May but still running a super impressive time.

Potter is determined to break the illustrious 17 minute barrier which will surely come given his current trajectory.

In third place was the men's club captain Sam Jepson who is edging back to his best form.

Jepson set out to break 18 minutes and he did it within a gnat's whisker with a time of 17:59.

First in the ladies field was Sarah Chynoweth who is returning to running after a maternity break.

In her first race for more than two years, Chynoweth is making huge progress, clocking a time of 21:03, which she will fancy her chances of beating before the season is out.

Next was Rachel Hamilton, running a five second personal best with a time of 21:07 in her first road race of 2024.

Hamilton was closely followed by Hannah Whittaker who also clocked a small personal best with a time of 21:18. Both athletes are edging closer to that coveted sub 21-minute marker.

Performances were strong throughout as a super impressive 44 club members ran either a personal best or attempted the distance in a race setting for the first time.

Highlights of which included Emma Duncan who took a big chunk off her personal best with a time of 25:15, beating her time set last year by well over one minute.

Jaqueline Jacobs broke a six-year personal best by a huge 32 seconds to clock 27:55.

The stand-out ladies performer was without doubt the returning Edina Burns, in her first race for five years.

Burns smashed the 30 minute mark for the first time by 1min 22secs and is clearly enjoying her running again.

James McMullen just keeps on getting better.

His personal best is now set at 20:07 after breaking his time by one minute and he is now agonisingly close the sub 20-minute mark.

Andrew MacAllister turned heads when he broke a 10-year personal best by 32 seconds in what isn't a favoured distance for him but one he clearly put himself through the mill for.

The star of the men’s field was young Riley Maksymiw-Magan who exceeded all expectations to run a super impressive 18:59 in his first attempt at the distance and his best race to date.

Four members of Grantham Running Club made their way to the Revesby in the heart of Lincolnshire to Race the Estate, organised by Trident Sports Events.

The location provided stunning scenery, with runners setting off for various distances from the deer park and off into tree lined routes presenting a mix of cross country, tarmac and gravel tracks.

First to set off was Ellie Catterson in the half marathon and she finished in a time of 2:06 and achieved a personal best.

Ellie commented that, apart from the lumpy fields, it was a beautiful course and she would do it again.

The other three GRC members took part in the 10k race,

Russell Maksymiw, in his first race of 2024, wasn't looking forward to racing in the heat but gave it a good go and was more than happy with his time of 47:28 which placed him first in his age category and seventh overall.

For Dan and Catherine Wallace, who had a flight booked at 2am the next morning, the plan of attack was a more casual approach and enjoying the scenery.

First back was Dan in a time of 1:02:23 while Catherine finished in 1:13:35.
