Relegation looks likely from the Northern Premier League Midlands Division for Grantham Town Football Club

Grantham Town's seemingly inevitable relegation from the Northern Premier League could be confirmed this weekend.

The Gingerbreads are currently 14 points adrift of safety in the Midlands Division with just five matches remaining ahead of Saturday's home game with Wellingborough Town at the Meres.

Even if Nathan Arnold's side collect their first win since mid-October, they need to rely on Bedworth United failing to pick up any points in their home clash with Loughborough Students in order to prevent their relegation to the United Counties League.

Grantham go into the match on the back of a three-game losing streak which was extended at the weekend in their 4-2 away defeat at Sutton Coldfield.

Two goals in five first half minutes from Jevin Seaton had given Grantham a good advantage which was halved just before the half-hour mark by a penalty from Ryan Edmunds.

Kory Burke brought the Royals level eight minutes before half-time before Edmunds put the hosts ahead after the break.

Grantham then had Harvey Ridgley sent off before Reece Gibson sealed their fate with Coldfield's fourth goal in injury-time.

The Royals had won 3-0 in the reverse fixture at the Meres and came close to breaking the deadlock early on as Burke blasted a shot which rattled the top of the crossbar.

Burke curled another effort just wide before the hosts' promising start was stung by a 20th minute opener for Grantham.

A mix-up in the home defence saw a wayward pass collected by the Gingerbreads who played in Seaton to slot home the first goal.

Coldfield were then handed a gilt-edged chance to equalise a minute later when Grantham goalkeeper James Leverton fumbled the ball to Edwards who shot over with the goal at his mercy.

Grantham took advantage of the let-off to double their lead in the 25th minute as a free-kick found an unmarked Seaton to head home the second goal.

Leverton produced a superb save to deny Edmunds but, from the resultant corner, the hosts had cut the deficit within four minutes as AJ Adelekan was adjudged to have held back Pedro Lima and Edmunds scored from the spot.

Cameron Collins went close for the hosts shortly after before Coldfield equalised eight minutes before the break.

A well-struck cross was deflected into the path of Burke who managed to steer his finish past Leverton to send the sides into half-time on level terms.

Parity lasted just 11 minutes of the second half before the Royals had hit the front for the first time as Edmunds bundled the ball home at the back post from Tom Hurley's corner.

Ridgley was then red-carded shortly after for bringing down Remmie Birch and being adjudged as the last man.

Leverton produced another excellent stop to deny Edmunds from the resultant free-kick while Coldfield had an effort ruled out for offside after Jack Lynch finished at the far post from Burke's delivery.

Leverton kept Grantham in the game by denying Fraser Doyle at point blank range but he was powerless in injury-time to prevent Gibson turning home Birch's cross to seal Sutton's success which has left Grantham on the brink of relegation.
