Grantham Town draw with Lye Town in the Northern Premier League

Grantham were left to rue missed chances in their relegation showdown with Lye Town on Saturday.

The Gingerbreads created the better opportunities in the Northern Premier League Midlands Division clash against their fellow strugglers.

However, the lack of a ruthless streak kept Grantham rooted to the foot of the table and 11 points adrift of safety.

Manager Nathan Arnold was pleased with the performance of his charges but frustrated they were unable to turn their chances into three points.

He said: "I felt we did enough to win the game.

"I was pleased with our effort, commitment, desire and determination to win the game and, on another day, we come out with three points.

"Unfortunately, we didn't take our chances though.

"The pleasing thing was that we are creating chances and are looking a goal threat at times."

Arnold had made five changes to his starting line-up following the defeat at Coleshill Town last weekend.

Goalkeeper Paul Cooper came in for Curtis Hall following his arrival from National League North side Buxton.

Charlie Parks made his debut in defence following his arrival on work experience from Lincoln City while Ben Richards also came in for his first start.

Harry Olivant and Lewis Darlington were also recalled to the team as Grantham looked for their first league win since the middle of October.

The Gingerbreads created the first opening of the game as Max Cook saw a shot turned over the crossbar by Lye goalkeeper Ben Newey following a Sam Muggleton long throw.

Parks then saw a header from the resultant corner blocked on the line before Newey kept out a low drive from Darlington with Freddie Allen's follow-up being blocked.

Cooper had enjoyed a relatively quiet debut in the first half with one shot from distance by Denis Digie being comfortably dealt with by the new home custodian.

Matt Saunders sent a header wide for the visitors after the break before Grantham created the best chance of the game.

Substitute Jevin Seaton latched onto a ball over the top and took advantage of a misunderstanding in the visiting defence to round Newey but he shot wide from distance with the goal at his mercy.

Grantham were then nearly made to pay for the miss as Digie burst into the box before firing his close range effort wide of the home goal.

The Gingerbreads are back in action at the Meres on Saturday when they host fourth-placed Sporting Khalsa.
