Grantham Town lose to Anstey Nomads in the Northern Premier League

Two goals in each half sent the Gingerbreads to another defeat on the road at Anstey Nomads on Saturday.

Three were conceded from set pieces with the fourth immediately after the third leaving Grantham 12 points from safety with 12 games left in their Northern Premier League Midlands Division campaign.

Manager Nathan Arnold admitted his side had failed to match their high-flying hosts who are pushing for promotion this term.

He said: "We were well short.

"It was evident to see, the levels we were at were not good enough.

"We gave ourselves a mountain to climb and weren't tight enough. We were beaten by the better team."

The game was only four minutes old before Anstey took the lead.

James Tague delivered a free kick into the Grantham penalty area that was flicked on and Jordan Annable powered a header at the far post across goalkeeper Paul Cooper into the net.

A few minutes later Zayn Hakeem ran at the Grantham defence and let fly from distance but lifted his shot over the crossbar.

For a while Grantham competed without threatening, but a second goal with almost half an hour gone put the game firmly in the control of the home side.

Henry Bestwick should have done better midway through the first half when a series of poor attempts to clear gave him a shooting chance and, although he hit his shot well, it was off target.

The second goal came on 28 minutes when a corner was flicked on at the near post and Leo Brown was at the far stick to fire in.

Anstey had two late chances to add to their lead before half-time.

Cooper made a good save to turn a hooked effort wide before Brown then got behind the Grantham defence but shot across the goal and wide.

The second half was disrupted early on by a touchline incident that saw a red card for Grantham assistant boss Dennis Rhule and two yellows for the home side.

Anstey created chances for Bestwick and Kyle Tomlin while a poor free kick from the Gingerbreads gave Anstey a three-on-three break but eventually the Gingerbreads recovered.

Just after the hour mark Anstey had their third goal.

Another corner was only cleared to the edge of the penalty area and Brad Munns' attempted header only found Annable and he drove his shot into the back of the net.

Two minutes later Grantham were four goals down.

Giving the ball away 30 yards out, the Gingerbreads were beaten by a clinical Anstey side with Jacob Fenton finishing Grantham off.

Tom Senior finally brought a save from Conrad Logan on 68 minutes. as his header was stopped well by the Anstey goalkeeper.

Another Anstey corner caused problems for the Gingerbreads but this time Annable missed the target.

With the game won for the home side, they relaxed and Grantham worked a couple of late chances.

However, neither Tom Pawson nor Lewis Darlington tested Logan to round off a disappointing afternoon for the Gingerbreads.
