Grantham Town look to maintain momentum against Winterton Rangers in Lincolnshire Senior Trophy

Grantham Town boss Mitch Griffiths says maintaining momentum is key as his side looks to build on their strong recent form.

The Gingerbreads turn their attention to the Lincolnshire Senior Trophy this weekend after going unbeaten in their last six league and cup matches.

They head into the tie against Winterton Rangers on the back of a 3-2 league win over Daventry Town last Saturday.

“Momentum is huge in football,” said Griffiths.

“We had a good September being undefeated, but we must back that up now.

“I enter every game and see it as a must-win, so to me it doesn’t matter if it’s league or cup.”

That winning mentality has been key to Grantham’s resurgence under Griffiths, who oversaw a complete rebuild of the squad during the summer.

While he admits the challenge has been tougher than expected, the manager believes the hard work is starting to pay off.

“It’s been a complete rebuild and if I’m honest, it’s been a lot more difficult than I thought it would be,” he said.

“After pre-season, we knew the first two months we wouldn’t be anywhere near where we wanted to be, it was just a case of being hard to beat and getting as many points as possible.

“To be a couple of months in now and only lost one league game and still be in three cup competitions gives us a great platform. I’m really happy with where the squad is at now, it feels settled.”

Griffiths has also been impressed with the strength of the United Counties League Premier Division North, describing it as the best it’s been for years.

“I personally think this is the best the UCL has been for a long time,” he said.

“The standard is really high, there are no easy games now, and it’s been proven that anyone can beat anyone. It’s going to be a really tight season.”

Despite the club’s positive start, Griffiths insists there is still room for improvement.

“We’re only just starting to gel as a team and build those relationships,” he said.

“We need to improve in both boxes and be more ruthless. But as I said, the squad feels settled and we’re happy with where we’re at.”

Griffiths plans to make a few changes on Saturday, but not at the expense of his side’s winning mentality.

“There will be a couple of changes,” he confirmed.

“Cup games are a great opportunity to get minutes into lads coming back from injury or unavailability.”

The Gingerbreads then travel to Wisbech Town in the UCL Premier Division North on Tuesday night - the start of three successive games on the road in a week.
