Kesteven Rugby Club’s ladies’ team are victorious against Mellish
Kesteven Ladies made it back-to-back wins in Women's NC 2 Midlands (North) with a 41-0 success over Mellish on Sunday.
It followed up the 84-3 win over Amber Valley a fortnight ago to leave the ladies with two victories from their opening three league games.
They took the lead when Phoenix Robinson scored her first try of the day after strong work from the forwards set a good platform within the opposition's 22.
A series of penalties meant the ladies were able to make their way into the 22 again with a final penalty on the five metre line that allowed Beth Harland to find the try line.
The opposition bought a strong pack and K’s had to dig deep and stay strong to turn them over.
The play continued to ebb and flow from left to right and, with the home side retaining good possession, it allowed Amy Brumhead, Megan Alderton and Phoenix to all cross the line before half-time.
The ladies were conscious not to switch off at the halfway point and continued to keep the pressure on by challenging for every ball.
Patience paid off when several phases eventually led to getting the ball wide to full-back Kelly King who beat three defenders to get her first try of the game.
Mellish put together several good phases and looked like they would make it over the try line only for Kesteven to dig deep in defence by making several strong tackles to keep the visitors out and continue the clean sheet.
Further strong runs from Kelly King and Emma Austen following a clearance kick from the visitors set the platform for Phoenix to complete her hat-trick and round off the scoring. Zoe Osborn added three conversions to Kesteven's seven tries.
The ladies travel to Ashfield on Sunday.
Kesteven's men's first team return to Counties 1 Midlands East (North) action on Saturday after a bye weekend with a home match against Hinckley 2nds.
