Dave Sharples continues his run of success at Sudbrook Moor Golf Club

Sudbrook Moor rested all its match play competitions at the time of the national lockdowns and it seems that the break has brought a refreshed fervency for the re-launch of the scheme.

Forty seven members have responded this season and entered into the spirit of getting in touch with opponents and meeting all the play-by deadlines which is a pleasing achievement and a comfort to committee organiser, Darren Nicholson, who was rewarded with the total success of the match play.

Looking at eventual champion Dave Sharples’ progress through the six rounds, this enthusiastic left hander had a tough first round with single figure Dan Blankley and went through with a 2&1 victory.

Senior Mick Beasley gave Sharples a great 18 hole run for his money but he squeezed through one up into the third round.

Richard Cocks was next to fall by the wayside, as did on-form Liam Cornes in the quarter final.

Meanwhile, in the opposite semi-final, Roy Nelson met and beat Ken Pratt who, as a new member at the club, had earlier been impacting some strong opposition and looked like a challenge.

In Sharples’ testing semi-final, he enjoyed a great 2&1 result over the experienced Steve Furphy.

So, it was a final of two left handers, between Sharples and Nelson which could go either way as both had been enjoying successful match play and stroke play all year.

On the day, Sharples meant business and, despite giving shots, finished the match on the 15th green with a 4&3 success for another title and championship.

Sharples added another great season to a dozen others while, always the gentleman, Roy Nelson - who has played golf all his life throughout the world - took 'losing finalist' as another of his special Sudbrook Moor experiences and achievements and will be back to try again next season.
