Leader intervenes to keep some free parking in Boston Road, Holbeach after price hike prompted backlash
The district council leader has stepped in to reverse a decision to axe free parking from a town site – after the move sparked a backlash from businesses and residents.
South Holland District Council leader Nick Worth is using his powers to amend the proposed tariffs at the Boston Road Car Park in Holbeach.
The council had been set to axe free parking there entirely, but Coun Worth’s new proposal – subject to a decision notice to be published later this week – is for that to become:
The move marks a compromise from the current situation, where there are two hours of free parking.

These rates will apply between 8am and 6pm, Monday to Saturday, and will come into effect from April 8 2024.
Coun Worth, who represents the Holbeach Hurn ward, said: “I am taking this decision as leader on behalf of the council, having taken on board extensive feedback, in particular from partner organisations as well as residents and wider stakeholders, about the impact removing the current free short-stay parking provision in Boston Road could have on the local economy and for the town’s residents and visitors.
“This decision, coupled with the removal of all remaining parking charges after 6pm in Spalding town car parks from April 8, demonstrates our continued support to residents and businesses whilst continuing to deliver our key services.”
The move had prompted a petition in opposition from Amanda Cook – who argued the move was ‘ridiculous’ and could harm the town.
