Cambridge Belfry is a lakeside oasis where you can be spoilt, dine, relax and unwind

I am sure I am speaking for most of you out there when I say my wife and I work very hard and feel we deserve a little bit of a treat now and then.

Just a chance to escape the everyday stresses, get away, spend some time together and forget about the treadmill that is modern day life.

We did just that at the end of February and the beauty was we didn’t even have to go far to enjoy an overnight stay and the small oasis of joy and peace we sought so much.

The Cambridge Belfry Hotel & Spa is situated just outside the city, in Cambourne and only an 80 minute drive from Spalding – but when you get there and start to unwind, you could be anywhere.

From the impressive welcoming reception area, to the plush bedrooms, from the comfy bar and stylish dining area to the spa and all the treatments it offers, this countryside hotel is one where the cares and worries drain away.

Just seven miles from the pretty University city of Cambridge and set by a beautiful lakeside location, the four-star Belfry is surrounded by acres of greenery.

There are 120 spacious, modern rooms at the hotel and we stayed in a particularly stunning suite.

The large bedroom, with comfy bed and impressively sized bathroom would have been enough on its own for a night or two– but the adjoining lounge area really made it special.

Somewhere to watch TV, read, or just chat about the day.

The first thing we did after settling in was book ourselves in for a couple of treatments, Josi enjoying one of the many facials on offer, while I enjoyed a massage on the back of my body.

I then enjoyed the swimming pool, jacuzzi, sauna and steam room while Josi read and relaxed on one of the nearby loungers.

A shower and change and we then enjoyed a couple of drinks at the bar before being seated in the stylish yet comfortable Bridge Restaurant.

The menu here is very tempting and our choices did not disappoint. Josi had barbecue glazed meatballs, slow roast belly of pork and then a wonderful Eton Mess.

I had the most wonderful leek, potato and onion soup, served with scorched wholemeal loaf and a gorgeous blue cheese butter, followed by chargrilled chicken supreme and a dark chocolate truffle.

Then it was back to our lovely room to finish the bottle of white we’d bought with our meal.

And there was another treat to come in the morning – the breakfast! I don’t know about you, but if I stay somewhere only offering a Continental option, I’m always slightly disappointed.

No, this was the Full Monty and the bacon and sausages where of the highest quality. Lovely.

To be honest, we were very sad to leave and return to – as much as we love them – the dogs, the teenagers and our jobs.

Next time we’ll stay for a couple of nights and enjoy the delights we know Cambridge has to offer.

But this time, a one-night stay was still splendid and we left The Belfry relaxed, refreshed and rejuvinated.
