Drivers’ 12-mile diversion as work to get underway for £260,000 replacement footpath for Stickney

A £260,000 project to replace a village’s worn footpath will get underway on Monday (October 27).

Contractors expect construction of the pathway along Horbling Lane in Stickney – between Boston and Spilsby – to take four months to complete.

However, as the section close to the East Fen Drain is so narrow, there will be a signed 12-mile diversion in place for around five weeks, which will avoid the smaller single-track lanes.

It will turn north along Spilsby Road in Eastville, before heading down Fen Road towards Toynton St Peter, left to Toynton All Saints, before joining the A16 at the northern end of the village.

There will be temporary traffic lights in place for the rest of the scheme, which has a projected finishing date of Wednesday, February 18, 2026.

Karen Cassar, Lincolnshire County Council’s assistant director of highways, said: “I am delighted that we are able to bring in this improvement for Stickney.

“The current path is past its best and needs replacing.

It has naturally got to the end of its life cycle and we’re investing into this works scheme so that those who use this route can continue to do so safely.

“These works will cost around £260,000 to deliver and involve a crew replacing the existing footpath surface, which has reached the end of its lifecycle.

“We will also rebuild crossing points and vehicular access along the route, to make things better for those in the area.

“This improvement is another part of our ongoing footpath uplift across the county and because of the nature of the work on this site – especially where the road narrows up to East Fen Drain, we have to put a diversion route using like-for-like roads in place.

“This is for the safety of road users and the crew.

“I would like to thank everyone effected for their patience and understanding whilst we are delivering the programme of work for Stickney.”

Work will take place between 7:30am and 5:30pm on Mondays to Fridays with no weekend construction planned to take place.
