Future of Titanic Bridge in Lincoln hanging in the balance as it remains closed for ‘safety reasons’

The future of a bridge in Lincoln that has been closed for over four months due to “safety reasons” appears to be hanging in the balance, with the responsible company remaining tight-lipped over investigations and when it might return to use — if at all.

Titanic Bridge, connecting Watersides North and South in the city and sometimes known as Witham Park Bridge, was first closed to the public on March 22, 2024.

It was closed suddenly for investigation works after it was deemed unsafe, with fencing put up to block vehicle access. Residents around the area said this has caused real issues for commuting to and from work or the school run.

Lincolnshire County Council said the bridge was the responsibility of commercial advisory firm Hodgson Elkington LLP, which was acquired by property consultants Lambert Smith Hampton in 2016.

However, signage at the bridge indicated that it was being handled by London & Scottish Property Investment Management Ltd (LSPIM), and Lambert Smith Hampton denied involvement in the management of the bridge when contacted.

LSPIM said it hoped to reopen the bridge “as soon as possible” but we are now more than four months down the line, and appear to be no closer to a return date.

When asked for an update on what the issue is that prompted the closure, the scope of works and how long it might take, a spokesperson for LSPIM said:

“We are still in the process of carrying out investigations so there’s no further update at this time,” they said.

When asked if they could categorically rule out the bridge closing for good, the spokesperson reiterated there was no update to be made.

There have been signs of change and clear construction work presence at the bridge, though, with the installation of more permanent fencing to block access.

The previous temporary fencing can be found on the floor in the middle of the bridge, and the new measures come after reports of people moving temporary fences out of the way to cross it.

With the addition of a more permanent blockade, it would appear that these investigation works still have some time to go, and the wait continues to go on for the return of Titanic Bridge.
