What are Lincolnshire Police’s tolerance levels for speeding?

Figures from the police have revealed how much over the speed limit drivers can be before being clocked.

All fixed speed cameras will have a trigger point for catching people and the limit varies across the country.

In Lincolnshire, the cameras are set to go off at anything 10% plus 2mph over the signposted speed limit, figures from a Freedom of Information request submitted by LincsOnline to the police have revealed.

This means in a 30mph zone drivers will be caught when they travel at 35mph or above and on a 60mph road speeds above 68mph will be clocked.

The tolerance is the same for all 40 speed cameras across the county, which vary from fixed to average, and has not changed in the past five years.

Despite the thresholds the law itself is clear - drivers who exceed the speed limit are immediately liable for a speeding prosecution.

A spokesperson for Lincolnshire Road Safety Partnership said: “The guidance issued by the National Police Chiefs Council (NPCC) suggests when enforcement action will be taken against speeding motorists – this is usually when the relevant speed limit is exceeded by 10% plus 2 mph.

“However, this is for guidance purposes only, a police officer has the discretion to act outside it if they deem the circumstances warrant.

“Whilst we rely on the majority of drivers to adhere to the speed limits imposed, often for very good reasons, prosecution has to be justifiable and proportionate and this is why in most circumstances we adhere to the NPCC guidance.”

Figures obtained by LincsOnline last year revealed on average more than 100 drivers a day are being caught by speed cameras.

Some of these motorists were caught at staggering speeds, with the highest being a driver travelling at 142mph on the A1 northbound at Barrowby near Grantham.

In Rutland there are no fixed speed cameras, however officers are regularly out doing speed checks.
