Lift to Lincoln Castle walls will soon reopen after several months closed
The Lincoln Castle walls will soon be open to everyone again after the lift is repaired.
It has been out of action for several months, meaning the tour of the walls has only been accessible by stairs.
The spiral stairs and lift were installed against the eastern rampart in 2015 by Lincolnshire County Council, which manages the castle.
City of Lincoln Council’s planning committee wanted to scale the walls recently to get a better view of a planning application.
However, the broken lift meant not all of them were able to make the climb.
The lift gives access to the Medieval Wall Walk, with panoramic views of Lincoln Cathedral, Castle Square and the Bailgate area.
Kim Vickers, culture services manager at Lincoln Castle, said: “We’d like to thank our visitors for their patience whilst essential repairs have been carried out to the Castle’s Medieval Wall Walk lift.
“As people will appreciate, caring for a building that is almost 1,000 years old requires specialist attention that can take time.
“Happily, these repairs are now nearing completion, and the lift is expected to fully reopen in the coming weeks – meaning all our visitors can once again take in the stunning views across the city.”
Entrance to the castle grounds is free, with access to the walls, Victorian prison and Magna Carta vault sold separately.
The castle was built shortly after the Normans conquered England, on the site of a previous Roman fort on the hill overlooking Lincoln.
