Last season’s Nottinghamshire county cup champions too strong for the current Lincolnshire county cup champs as Newark and Sherwood United run out 4-0 winners over Lincoln United
It was a fitting conclusion for the Newark Highwaymen’s last match at Station Road as they ran out 4-0 winners over Lincoln United in the United Counties League Premier Division North fixture.
Newark and Sherwood United made it ten games unbeaten under dynamic duo, manager Romaine Graham and his offsider Tristan Spencer as they were the first cab off the rank of the Easter Monday Double Header league promotion.
The initiative saw fans receive a discounted rate to watch two matches and they were treated to a goal festival before they headed to Southwell City to watch the second fixture where the Zebras took on Newark Town in the Blue Stripe Derby.
The clash saw the current Lincolnshire County Cup champions take on the hosts who won the Nottinghamshire County Cup last season.
Nottinghamshire won the day as The Whites experienced a whitewash at Station Road.
The Whites arrived at Station Road Collingham just 48 hours after travelling to Romford where they secured a 2-2 draw in the FA Vase semi-final.
Lincoln United will welcome Romford to their home this Saturday for their upcoming home leg of the competition.
Their manager Chris Funnell decided to rest several Lincoln players for the upcoming FA Vase clash after Bourne Town secured the title of league champions recently.
Lincoln United are currently second in the Premier Division North and strategically it made sense for Funnell to ensure he has fresh players for the upcoming cup game.
The Highwaymen who sit in 11th place put on an excellent show for their home fans as they seized the opportunity to demonstrate their goal scoring skills.
Fullback Ryley Thompson scored a rare goal to open the scoring in the 12th minute with an impressive strike from way out that surprised Lincoln keeper Jack Steggles.
Steggles who has been impressive for The Whites lately had his work cut out for him as the Highwaymen pressed their attacking chances throughout the game.
The game remained tight in the first-half and the hosts went into the break up 1-0.
However, the second-half was a different story as goals from Kameron Campbell, Tom Jones and Liam Moran saw The Highwaymen run away with the game.
Lincoln manager Funnell was far from impressed with his side’s performance.
“It was quite simply not good enough,” he told his club’s media team.
“We let in some really poor goals and were poor in possession.
“I apologise to everyone who came and watched us.
“The amount of games we have to play doesn’t help but it is no excuse for the performance.”
Graham was more upbeat about his team’s display.
“I am proud of them more than anything, I am immensely proud,” he said.
“I cannot speak highly enough about the lads.
“When I came in I thought that we need to be hard to beat and after ten unbeaten we have shown that.”
The Highwaymen will now head to league champions Sherwood Colliery on Saturday (kick-off 3pm) where they will be hoping to cause an upset to end their season on a high note.
