Teenager from Louth hit with penalty notice for inappropriate use of fireworks

A teenager has been fined for ‘irresponsible’ behaviour after reports of a gang throwing fireworks at each other as well as at cars and shops.

The alarming incident occurred last night (Thursday October 31) in Louth — and has prompted a warning that police will act on people engaged in dangerous behaviour with fireworks.

Officers say they were called out just before 10pm after receiving reports of a group of people ‘setting off fireworks at each other as well as aiming it as shops, houses and moving cars’ on Mercer Row.

Police attended the scene and, after CCTV enquiries, identified an 18-year-old man who was issued with a penalty notice for the inappropriate use of fireworks.

Inspector Jacky Evans said: “Used irresponsibly, fireworks can cause a lot of damage to property, and do significant harm to people and animals.

“We know people want to celebrate events like Halloween and eventually Bonfire Night, but we would urge people to celebrate responsibly and safely – especially if you’re using fireworks.

“We will be stepping up our patrols in Louth in the lead up to Bonfire Night and we will take action against those who act irresponsibly.”
