JD Wetherspoon applies for longer opening hours at its Captain Noel Newton beer garden in Oakham

A pub beer garden could open later into the night if a request for extended hours is approved.

J D Wetherspoon has applied for permission to extend the opening hours of its beer garden at The Captain Noel Newton in Oakham.

The outdoor area is currently open until 11pm each night but the firm wants to extend this to midnight on Fridays, Saturdays and bank holiday Sundays.

The pub first opened in Oakham’s High Street in November 2013. Its closing time is 1.30am on Fridays and Saturdays.

The planning application says: “There is a customer requirement for the slightly later garden hours on these days. It is considered that surrounding noise, such as that from the adjacent Bills Bar, is of a level at this time on Friday and Saturday nights that later use of the garden would not negatively impact the local area.”

If the extended hours are approved, managers will check on the beer garden every 15 minutes to monitor the noise. They will be supported by existing door staff.

Rutland County Council will decide whether to allow the extended hours.
