Uppingham care home staff climb Ben Nevis to support Dying Matters in Rutland
Care home colleagues scaled a mountain to raise money for a service which provides end-of-life support.
Lucy Sharratt and Aggie Sykes, who work at Wisteria House Residential Home in Uppingham, raised £2,000 for Dying Matters in Rutland when they climbed Ben Nevis.
The organisation was set up by the lord Lieutenant of Rutland, Dr Sarah Furness, to help people who are receiving end-of-life care and their families.
Lucy said: “It was the hardest hike ever but we made it to the summit. There was sweat, tears, laughter and a whole lot of positive mindsets to complete it.
“We’re very grateful to have had the support of friends and family walking with us and would like to thank all those who donated.”
Representatives from Dying Matters visited the care home on Monday to receive a cheque. Chairperson Jennifer Fenelon said: “We warmly congratulate Lucy and Aggie on such an impressive effort and were delighted they made it to the top.
“This challenge is not for the fainthearted. Their efforts have put a spotlight on services for Rutland’s elderly people and the donation will be used to support Rutland people preparing for the end of their lives.”
Care home resident Margaret Tomalin said: “We are so proud of Lucy and Aggie for doing this for such a good cause. There are many elderly people in Rutland like us and we are glad the funds are going to Dying Matters in Rutland which supports them and their families.”
