Oakham Castle hosts event by Ukrainian Rotary Impact Club to mark third anniversary of war

Families who hosted those fleeing war were among those honoured at an event to mark the third anniversary of the conflict in Ukraine.

The Ukrainian Rotary Impact Group hosted the community event at Oakham Castle on Tuesday to allow people to reflect, show solidarity, and support those affected by the war in Ukraine.

It honoured the resilience and sacrifice being made by millions of Ukrainians as well as the UK’s support for the country.

The event was attended by sponsors, supporters and host families who joined the Homes for Ukraine program, directly helping 40 Ukrainian families in Rutland.

It featured a screening of the film Fort Kharkiv, produced by filmmaker Nataliia Yakovleva, who lived in Stamford for a spell, and funds were raised for those injured in the conflict.

The Lord Lieutenant of Rutland, Dr Sarah Furness, and Richard Chesterfield, Rutland High Sheriff-in-waiting, both spoke at the event.

“I want to congratulate the Ukrainian Rotary Impact Club for arranging this evening and thank the group for their hospitality, for their fortitude and positive thinking which has brought a taste of welcome Ukrainian culture to Rutland.

“I know Rutland has relished the company of our Ukrainian guests. We in Britain wish to stand beside you. Let us hope that Ukraine’s heroism wins out and the Ukrainian identity and culture can be preserved.”
