The Angler pub and Nepalese restaurant in Oakham will close at the end of May

A pub-restaurant with a Nepalese theme will close at the end of the month.

The Angler Pub and Nepalese Dining in Mill Street, Oakham, is run by the Lapen Inns pub group, which has five other pub venues, including The Bell at Sawtry.

The management team has posted a message on social media that says: “It is with some sad emotions that we share some important news with you today.

“After much reflection and consideration, The Angler Pub and Nepalese Dining will be closing its doors on May 26, 2025, due to unforeseen circumstances.

“While this decision was not made lightly, we want to take this moment to express our deepest gratitude to each and every one of you who has been part of our journey here.”

The group will open a new pub, The Queen Elizabeth in King’s Lynn, in the first week of June.

Founder of Lapen Inns, Subodh Gautam, said the six members of staff, enployed in the kitchen and front-of-house, has all been offered jobs in the new pub.

He added: “I love pubs and I’m on a mission to save them from closure but it just wasn’t working for us at The Angler. We just weren’t making enough money to continue.

“The Government is not helping by charging high business rates and raising National Insurance and the minimum wage at a time when other costs are also increasing.

“When you look at Europe, and particularly Germany, they have reduced their VAT. There’s no support for us in the UK and that’s why we have struggled.

“Fortunately The Queen Elizabeth in King’s Lynn looks like it could be a more viable location.”

It is understood that The Angler is owned by the Heineken brewery and that it will find new landlords to run the pub.
