GCSE results 2024: Uppingham Community College’s headteacher praises pupil’s resilience after pandemic and fire

Pupils who started secondary school during the pandemic have collected their GCSE results.

Headteacher at Uppingham Community College Ben Solly has praised pupils for their hard work.

He said: “This cohort experienced a huge amount of disruption to their education when they were in Year 7 and 8, with the pandemic causing school closures across the country and the Uppingham Community College fire in 2020 further delaying their return to school.

“In spite of this, they have demonstrated resilience and determination and everyone should be proud of their achievements.

“We wish the class of 2024 the very best of luck with their future endeavours and we thank them for all their contributions to our school community.”

Unlike other schools across the area, in recent years Uppingham Community College has chosen not to publish its GCSE results.

In 2022, Mr Solly explained it was because education has not been a level playing field in recent years.

He believes young people, their families and school communities have faced unique situations which make any comparisons between schools, or results from previous years, invalid and irrelevant.
