Eat My Words: Sun Inn Cottesmore
The quote ‘rejection is redirection’ is bandied around quite a lot these days and that phrase was none more true than when we went for a day out in Rutland, when a failed trip to another establishment led us to the Sun Inn of Cottesmore.
After a rather soggy outing at Rutland Water, we were ready for our spirits to be brightened by the quintessentially English pub known for splendid food that is the Sun Inn.
However, we were met with a slightly chilly welcome which almost made us regret our choice of restaurant although when it came to food service the staff at the Sun shone – clearly they just needed to warm up a bit.
While we were admiring the nicely decorated surroundings, the main event was delivered on piping hot plates which were neatly presented with the vegetable bowl - a nice addition for those who aren’t keen on all of our vegetable friends.
The food is your normal pub fodder taken up a notch with a range of traditional and also more interesting choices such as pizzas and kebabs which on our sample taste were very good.
The pizza bases were delicious and even better than some dedicated pizza places, however, if you prefer to live on the spicy side of life you may find that the pepperoni is lacking a bit of a kick.
Stuffed with quality meat, the steak and ale pie (handily pie of the day when we went) was excellent and came with what can be described as ‘proper’ chips.
While pondering what to have for dessert, thoughts turned to the menu itself which I felt was not befitting of such a nice country pub.
As the proud owner of a book entitled ‘Why Fonts Matter’, I felt that the rather generic typeface did not suit the establishment and took the ambiance down a notch – can we reprint the menus with a serif please?
Turning back to the food, dessert had arrived by the hand of a lovely server and was a sight to behold.
We had ordered chocolate brownie and ice cream (although this was switched to chocolate fudge cake) which was divine.
The ice cream was phenomenal and one of the best I had ever tasted while the cake itself was also delectable with the combination being so good you wanted to lick the plate – I would highly recommend it.
Out of five:
Food: All the meals high quality and the spectacular dessert stole the show: *****
Drinks: There was a good selection of drinks including both local and national beers and ciders: ****
Decor: A typical country pub but the Sun Inn felt homely and had a nice general ambience: *****
Staff: The lady serving us was delightful throughout the evening: *****
Price: Slightly on the pricey side however it could be considered reasonable for Rutland given the quality of the food: ****
