Mayor Paul Ainsley and Santa oversee the switching on of Oakham Christmas lights

Children helped a mayor light up a town for Christmas, despite dreadful weather brought by Storm Bert.

Councillor Paul Ainsley let the youngsters have their moment in the spotlight as they pressed the button to switch on Oakham’s decorations at 4pm on Sunday (November 24).

The new LED lights have been purchased by the town council for Oakham, and are more energy efficient than the old ones.

Coun Ainsley said: “The lights look beautiful and the switch-on went smoothly, despite the terrible weather and fortunately having spotted and repaired some vandalism to the decorations beforehand.

“I was delighted with the turnout considering it was pouring with rain. Children were dripping wet on their parents’ shoulders but they were still very excited to see the lights and Father Christmas.”

The council had taken the ‘difficult decision’ to cancel the accompanying Christmas market because of the strong winds - something that was reflected in Stamford too. Its town council cancelled Stamford Christmas Market, which was also due to be held on Sunday.

Thanking those involved in organising and running the lights switch-on in Oakham, including town councillors and Rutland Lions Club, Coun Ainsley also praised those who turned out in the bad weather to enjoy the festive spirit.

Parking will be free in Oakham on the three Saturdays before Christmas: December 7, 14 and 21. The earlier date is funded by Rutland County Council and the two later dates by Oakham Town Council.

The town council is also decorating empty shop fronts in the run-up to Christmas, to make sure the town is looking cheerful.
