Shoppers can park for free for two hours in Oakham's Catmose Car Park following review

Rutland County Council has introduced free two-hour parking in Oakham’s Catmose Car Park on

Saturdays.

The decision has been taken as part of the council’s annual parking review, which also includes a number of changes to parking restrictions following requests from residents, businesses, town councils and parish councils throughout the year.

A six-month trial of two-hour free parking at Catmose on Saturdays is now underway. Catmose Car Park is located just off Catmos Street, opposite Rutland County Museum.

Free one-hour parking in Church Street Car Park, which was previously introduced as a temporary measure to reduce the impact of long-running utility works in Oakham, has ended.

Coun Nick Begy (Con), portfolio holder for transport and highways, said: “We’re pleased to be able to trial free parking in Catmose Car Park on Saturdays as a way to attract more visitors into Oakham at the weekend. It’s a busy car park during the week but largely underused on Saturdays and Sundays, with many of the 122 spaces left unfilled. We hope the offer of two-hours free parking will encourage people to shop and stay longer in Oakham on a Saturday, particularly as we head into summer and visitor numbers peak.”

As part of its annual parking review, the council will also make a number of changes to parking restrictions in parts of Rutland, based on feedback and requests received from local people. These include:

  • Double yellow lines on Brooke Road, between Brooke Hill Academy and Trent Road
  • Double yellow lines on Kilburn End, Oakham, outside the play area
  • Addition of residents and limited waiting bays on Derwent Drive, Oakham
  • Double yellow lines to prevent HGV parking on Hackamore Way, Oakham
  • Limited waiting bays outside Greetham and Whissendine village shops
  • Double yellow lines along the south kerb of South View, Uppingham.
