Uppingham Community College plan events to mark 105th birthday - after centenary celebrations stopped by covid

Hundreds of school pupils will take part in a 10.5km walk to mark the 105th anniversary of a school.

Uppingham Community College is marking the milestone with the sponsored walk tomorrow (Friday, June 27), which 700 pupils will take part in.

The walk through Uppingham, Bisbrooke, Seaton and Lydingdon aims to raise £10,500 for the school’s six nominated charities.

The school marked its centenary in 2020 but was unable to celebrate because of lockdown.

Head of school David Anderson said: “Fast forward five years and we are delighted to be planning our ‘105 event’ to finally give our wonderful school the celebration it deserves.”

After the walk, pupils will return to the college campus for a festival-style afternoon of live music, sport, food, and fundraising.

The students will be waved off by the Lord Lieutenant of Rutland, Dr Sarah Furness, the County’s High Sheriff, Richard Chesterfield and Uppingham’s Mayor Cllr Dave Ainslie. Local radio personality Rob Persani from Rutland and Stamford Sound will broadcast his popular morning show live from the starting line.

All proceeds from the event will go towards the school’s six House charities, with an ambitious target of raising over £10,500. The UCC charities are; Cancer Research UK, The Trussell Trust, The East Midlands Air Ambulance, Emmaus UK, Wishes 4 Kids and Dementia UK. Donations can be given here.

“This is more than a celebration of UCC’s incredible history, “says David Anderson, “It’s a chance for our entire school community to come together in support of causes close to our hearts. We’re thrilled to honour our past while walking together toward a brighter future.”
